Fossil Fish Coprolite | Fish Poo

Coprolite is fossilized faeces, often found in silts, muds and clay of the Eocene Era. Coprolites are quite rare because they tend to decay rapidly, but when they are found, they are most commonly found among sea organisms.

Fish coprolite shows a variety of internal and external structures, including coiling, folding and contraction marks. Secondary features show surface cracking due to chemical, physical and biological change.

Most coprolite is composed chiefly of calcium phosphate, along with minor quantities of organic matter. By analysing coprolites, it is possible to infer the diet of the animal which produced them.
