Description
Flexicalymene trilobite
Flexicalymene is a genus of trilobites found abundantly in North America. Trilobites are a well-known fossil group of extinct marine arthropods, and probably most closely related to modern horseshoe crabs. Their name, meaning “three lobed,” refers to the plainly visible division of their bodies into the center axis – called an axial lobe – and the pleural lobes to either side.
Hard-shelled creatures with multiple body segments and jointed leg, trilobites ranged in size from a fraction of an inch to over two feet in length.
