Description
Graptolite rhabdosome
The name graptolite comes from the Greek graptos, meaning “written”, and lithos, meaning “rock”, as many graptolite fossils resemble hieroglyphs written on the rock. Each graptolite colony is known as a rhabdosome.
Graptolites were floating, colonial animals that have been most frequently preserved as carbonaceous impressions on black shales. They possessed a chitinous (fingernail-like) outer covering and lacked mineralized hard parts. When found as impressions, the specimens are flattened.
This fossil is in very good condition, with showy plate. Distal and proximal structures.
