Description

Baculite (Ammonite)

This extinct straight or uncoiled ammonite is found in marine mudstones throughout the Cretaceous period (70 – 78 million years) in many places in Alberta, Canada. This cone-shaped, straight shelled baculite resembles a cone with a squid stuck in the larger open end.

Occasionally fossil baculites can be found with a pearly nacre shell, and walled internal growth chambers filled with a calcite-barite mineral mixture showing coloured suture patterns. When cut and polished, the coloured mineral patterns and septal walls of the fossil are exposed.
