Description
Pyrite mineral
Pyrite belongs to the iron sulphide group of rocks and is a common mineral, found in a wide variety of geological formations. Named in antiquity from the Greek “pyr” for “fire”, because sparks flew from it when hit with another mineral or metal.
Golden-yellow in colour, with a metallic lustre, pyrite is often mistaken for gold, hence the well-known nickname of fool’s gold.
Water dissolved iron sulphide can crystallize, and is often seen in the bone marrow of fossil dinosaur bones.
